Although the title might be misleading, GMC stands for the Global Missions Conference, a major conference for church of Christ missionaries. This conference is held every three years, and it attracts many missionaries, future missionaries, Christian colleges, missionary organizations, and other people interested in missions (how many times can I use some form of “mission-” in one sentence?). This conference took place last week, from Wednesday until Saturday, in Arlington, Texas. After flying into DFW from Nashville, I headed over to the Arlington Convention Center. What followed was what Wes Yoakum appropriately deemed “Mark heaven”. I saw old friends; I met new friends; I connected with people who are going to mission field in the near future (Arequipa, Peru; Niteroi, Brazil; and more); I stayed with two old friends (and got to hold one’s adorable son); I talked and laughed and talked and laughed. I was in heaven.
One of the biggest blessings of the conference was the fire that it lit within me. Through four years of dreaming, planning, and training, we have had to deal with lots of details – packing, visas, tests, strategy, support, timelines, etc. But at this conference I was reminded that missions is about God, people, and community. The details help get you to the field, but ultimately the work is about leading people to God. It was truly a breath of fresh air.
And now more driving: Abilene – DFW – Houston – College Station – Houston – College Station – Houston – Costa Rica (flying, thankfully). My car and I are getting really close.
