GMC & Driving

Although the title might be misleading, GMC stands for the Global Missions Conference, a major conference for church of Christ missionaries. This conference is held every three years, and it attracts many missionaries, future missionaries, Christian colleges, missionary organizations, and other people interested in missions (how many times can I use some form of “mission-” in one sentence?). This conference took place last week, from Wednesday until Saturday, in Arlington, Texas. After flying into DFW from Nashville, I headed over to the Arlington Convention Center. What followed was what Wes Yoakum appropriately deemed “Mark heaven”. I saw old friends; I met new friends; I connected with people who are going to mission field in the near future (Arequipa, Peru; Niteroi, Brazil; and more); I stayed with two old friends (and got to hold one’s adorable son); I talked and laughed and talked and laughed. I was in heaven.

One of the biggest blessings of the conference was the fire that it lit within me. Through four years of dreaming, planning, and training, we have had to deal with lots of details – packing, visas, tests, strategy, support, timelines, etc. But at this conference I was reminded that missions is about God, people, and community. The details help get you to the field, but ultimately the work is about leading people to God. It was truly a breath of fresh air.

And now more driving: Abilene – DFW – Houston – College Station – Houston – College Station – Houston – Costa Rica (flying, thankfully). My car and I are getting really close.

Unclehood

While not nearly as good as parenthood, unclehood is nothing to be discredited. Being an uncle (or aunt) embraces many of the joys that come with kids, while at the same time side-stepping many of the difficulties of parenthood. Thus far, I have been enjoying the hugs, kisses, cute faces, squeals of delight, “firsts”, games, silliness, and plain old fun that comes along with unclehood. I have been enjoying these things for around 10 years now, first with my brother’s kids, then with my teammates’ kids, and now with my close friends’ kids. In fact, unclehood has swiftly become one of the defining characteristics of my life, and I couldn’t be happier about it. So, instead of referring to me by any previously picked nickname, you might seriously consider calling me “Uncle Mark” or “Tio Marcos” the next time you see me. Otherwise, pretty soon, I might not know who you are referring to. Unclehood – I’m lovin’ it.

Possibly one of my favorite pictures ever. Unfortunately, I don’t have one with Derek.

Road Trips

Houston, TX – Dallas, TX – Little Rock, AR – Cincinnati, OH – Jewett, TX – RoansĀ Prairie, TX. One massive loop to see teammates, births, friends, family, and my parents. Saying goodbye stinks, but it is great to see everyone. Bitter-sweet, to be sure.
